About the Name

Welcome to the site for the now-defunct Rebus Affair. Rebus was a group of top-notch singers and musicians who played a sophisticated blend of Rock, old school R&B and Blues.

"Our mission," says guitarist and leader Len Scaffidi, "was to provide a great show as well as a great party atmosphere. We played music that got everyone up on the dance floor, singing along and celebrating this uniquely American musical experience." A former NYC session player and Motown Records executive, Scaffidi says; "We played new and old songs that are a classic representation of American party music."

"It's amazing how well Steely Dan, James Taylor, Van Morrison and Bonnie Raitt fit into our sets alongside Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and Miles Davis," says Scaffidi. "Plus, when we play the blues, you can hear the jazz heritage and the rock excitement. It just shows that great songs and performances are timeless."

So, what happened? How did the wheels fall off? First of all, there was the challenge of keeping a nine-piece band together when everyone has a day job. People move, develop other priorities, etc. After a while, keeping the band in horn players and backup singers bacame a job unto itself. Then, there's the gig problem: Most clubs have trouble fitting a 5 piece band on stage. It got to the point where the only way the band was going to work regularly was to modify (water down) the setlist to include "crowd pleasers" that just weren't what the band's heart.

So, we folded. The website will stay up for a while....we still get a lot of visitors and music downloads; so we'll leave it up here for a while. Enjoy.
